Explosions
This ATEX certification means that these products comply with the European directives in the field of explosion under atmospheric conditions. Explosive atmospheres can be caused by flammable gases, vapors, mists or dusts. This can be mixed with the ambient air (oxygen) and a source of ignition leading to an explosion.
ATEX 153 and 114
ATEX (ATmospheres EXplosibles) is a directive outlining a number of technical and quality objectives that must be complied with to the satisfaction of a third party certification association.
Directive 1999/92/EC, also known as ‘ATEX 153’ or the ‘ATEX Workplace Directive’, refers to the minimum requirements for improving the health and safety protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.
Directive 2014/34/EC, also known as ‘ATEX 114’ or ‘the ATEX Equipment Directive’, on the approximation of the laws of Members States concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
The ATEX symbol is recognized internationally, providing safety assurances to users in EU states, as well as assuring users in the U.S. and other non-EU countries that the product was manufactured to high levels of safety.- Ex = ATEX certified
- II = This piece of equipment is made for use in all over ground explosive areas
- 2 = For use in Gas Zone 1 and Dust Zone 2 “An area in which an explosive mixture is likely to occur in normal operation”
- G = Suitable for use in Gas atmospheres
- c = Refers to the construction of the tool, pneumatic as opposed to electric
- IIA = Suitable for use in the least volatile gas environment, over ground.
- T4 = Maximum Surface Temperature: 135° “This values shows the highest possible temperature generated by the piece of equipment during normal operation “
- ATEX 153
-
ATEX 153 describes the minimum safety requirements for employers to create a healthy and safe working environment for workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres.
Organizations in the European Union with potentially explosive atmospheres must comply with the ATEX 153 Directive. For the Netherlands, these guidelines are contained in the
Working Conditions Act and regulations.Employers /owners should establish and maintain an explosion protection document. In these documents are identified and assessed explosion risks and measures are defined and planned to come to a safe working environment. Also be determined through a risk assessment hazardous areas, which ATEX 114 (see below) approved equipment should be used.
Hazardous area should be clearly identified for workers with a warning triangle in black contains the text 'EX' on a yellow background.
Since 20th of April 2016 is ATEX 137 (1999/92/EG) replaced by ATEX 153
- ATEX 114
-
ATEX 114 applies to equipment used in explosive atmospheres, and describes requirements for appliances (electric and non-electric) and providing protection against ("zones") where dust or gas explosion hazard may occur.
This Directive is incorporated in the Netherlands in the “Warenwetbesluit” explosion proof equipment and describes the general security goals. Specific requirements are included in European and international standards.
Explosion proof equipment which meets the requirements of ATEX 114 compliant, must be labelled with the 'x' Epsilon logo in a regular hexagon.
Since 20th of April 2016 is ATEX 95 replaced by ATEX 114 (2014/34/EU)
